What We Do

ResquLab: Fostering Research and Humanitarian Action in the Middle East

At ResquLab, we focus on generating impactful research that addresses both the immediate and long-term needs of conflict-affected communities, particularly in Lebanon and the broader Middle East. Our work is driven by the belief that evidence-based action is essential for improving the effectiveness of humanitarian aid and fostering sustainable development in conflict zones. We conduct field-based research that provides actionable insights into the needs of affected populations, while also supporting academic inquiry that can shape the future of humanitarian practice.

1. Assessing the Socio-Economic Impact of Crises

Lebanon has faced a multitude of crises—from economic collapse and political instability to the aftermath of the Beirut explosion. ResquLab’s research focuses on understanding the socio-economic impacts of these crises, particularly how they affect marginalized groups, refugees, and economically disadvantaged populations. We study how hyperinflation, unemployment, poverty, and food insecurity have worsened conditions for local communities.

By collecting real-time data from communities across Lebanon, we aim to understand the full extent of these impacts, focusing on economic vulnerability and social inequality. Our findings are shared with policymakers, international agencies, and local NGOs to ensure that humanitarian interventions are data-driven and tailored to the specific needs of each community.

2. Humanitarian Action: Impact and Effectiveness

ResquLab is dedicated to conducting research that evaluates the effectiveness of humanitarian aid in Lebanon. This involves studying the delivery of medical assistance, food aid, sanitation programs, and mental health support in conflict-affected areas. We work to understand the gaps in humanitarian response and to improve delivery systems through rigorous evaluations.

Our research teams conduct impact assessments to measure the outcomes of aid programs and determine whether interventions are meeting their goals. These evaluations help refine existing humanitarian programs and advocate for best practices in delivering aid to vulnerable populations.

3. Mental Health and Trauma Research in Conflict Zones

Lebanon has experienced decades of political instability and conflict, and this has left deep scars on its people. ResquLab’s research examines the mental health impact of these crises, including the psychological trauma faced by both Lebanese citizens and Syrian refugees. We assess the prevalence of mental health disorders such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety, and evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial support programs.

Our goal is to understand how mental health challenges are compounded by ongoing crises and to identify evidence-based interventions that can improve mental health care in conflict zones. We work with local mental health organizations, universities, and health professionals to ensure that our research has a practical impact on improving psychological well-being in affected communities.

4. Refugee Crisis Research: Lebanon as a Case Study

Lebanon is home to over 1.5 million Syrian refugees, a significant portion of its population. ResquLab’s research focuses on the humanitarian challenges posed by the refugee crisis, including access to education, healthcare, and employment. We conduct studies that explore the integration of refugees into Lebanese society and examine the strain on local resources, particularly in terms of housing, sanitation, and public services.

Our research helps to shed light on the socio-political dynamics of the refugee crisis and advocates for more sustainable refugee policies that balance humanitarian support with the long-term needs of both refugees and host communities.

5. Resilience and Recovery: Long-Term Solutions for Conflict-Affected Communities

While immediate humanitarian aid is crucial, ResquLab is equally committed to researching long-term recovery strategies for conflict-affected communities. We focus on how community-based approaches can foster resilience, empower local populations, and support sustainable development.

We study the role of local governance, economic recovery, and community rebuilding efforts in enhancing the capacity of conflict-affected populations to adapt and recover. Through partnerships with local NGOs and academic institutions, we aim to design research-driven solutions that can be implemented to rebuild communities in a way that promotes social cohesion and economic self-sufficiency.

6. Academic Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing

ResquLab works closely with academic institutions, research centers, and policy think tanks to ensure that our research is grounded in the latest academic thinking and contributes to the broader body of knowledge on humanitarian aid and conflict studies. Through joint research projects, academic publications, and conferences, we share our findings with the wider global community.

We also support the capacity building of young researchers and professionals in the Middle East, providing opportunities for them to engage in field-based research and data collection as part of ResquLab’s initiatives.

Our Research Methodology:

Our research is rooted in interdisciplinary approaches, drawing on expertise from fields such as:

Sociology and Social Work

Examining the impact of crisis on communities, family structures, and social networks.

Public Health

Studying the mental and physical health consequences of conflict and displacement.

Political Science

Investigating governance, state fragility, and political instability in conflict zones.

Economics

Analyzing the socio-economic impact of crises, including poverty, unemployment, and inflation.

By using a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative), we ensure that our findings are both statistically reliable and contextually relevant. We also incorporate local knowledge and community-based research to ensure that the voices of affected populations are heard and considered in all of our studies.
